Social status is a huge part of our society in America. We have this idea that you need to be able to make it on your own and if you can't do that then you don't deserve things such as healthcare and nicer things like a car and such. But when you are down on your luck, it is very hard to "pull yourself up by your bootstraps", which makes sense because that quote was created with the idea that it is impossible to do. When playing through spent, it really makes you realize that poverty is something that is cyclical. It is a whirlpool of debt and not having money that is hard to get out of. Poverty is linked to many different aspects of life, not just money. Mental health and physical health is a huge problem for people that are impoverished. Depression runs heavy in people that aren't able to go to a therapist or take a day off of work to see in. And many physical problems such as hurting yourself and not being able to go to the doctor because of how expensive it is or going to the dentist to get your teeth fixed. Holding on to a job is hard as well, you can have different car problems or because you are sick you aren't able to go which will get you fired real quick, as these jobs have people come and go constantly. Being poor is a huge problem and continues to be because the mentality is that everyone needs to succeed on their own. This isn't always possible and leaves behind many different people, especially those already caught in the whirlpool which tend to be people of different races.
Right now a huge problem is the ongoing problem with the coronavirus. This is especially going to be hard for people in poverty. They are usually not able to skip a day of work or go to the hospital because of how much money it costs to go there. This will cause a spread of the virus even quicker than it should. This, of course, will be blamed on people in poverty by many. It won't be blamed on the government that continues to keep them down. The poor and the mainstream media is usually never a good mix. It shows the poor as villians that are lazy and use up welfare benefits as though they don't need them and use them on drugs. Even though this isn't true, it is part of the reason why the people in poverty continue to not be able to get help when things like the coronavirus come around. People are clutching at their purse trying to stay away from the poor people, like they aren't... People.
