Reflection 1: Comparing Mainstream Media Coverage about the Protests in India to Ethnic coverage

The riots in India have been overshadowed in American media by things such as Donald Trump's impeachment and the Hong Kong riots, yet in India it is a very pressing matter. There was a bill passed in Indian Parliament called the Citizenship Amendment Act. The bill caused protests, and then riots, as many felt that it discriminates against Muslims based on their religion. While American media, in this case New York Times, does have news reports about the Indian Protests, they aren't as in depth as the news from media in India. India Today writes about the protests with great detail including places where riots were happening and the numbers of protestors, police force, and those that were injured. The New York Times gives more of an overarching summary of the protests happening in India and give a brief summary as to why they are happening and why the Citizenship Amendment Act is opposed by the population. It feels as though the reason the New York Times doesn't give a more in depth look to the protests is that the writer knows that people haven't been paying attention to what's been going on in India. This causes the writers the writers from the NYT to ease up on excruciating details and instead give a brief overview. The overview really excludes some of the painstaking and powerful messages that the India Times reports on because this story is more personal for this News Outlet. Although New York Times report is more broad than the India Times report, it does still have a sense of worry and belief that the protests need to happen to stop the Citizenship Amendment Act. New York Times shows that it's level of context just isn't as connected as the India Times is to the problem. This gives a more shallow look at the problem and shows that the values of the India Times and NYT are going to differ due to the personal attachment of the problem.
